Cruzado announces nationwide search for MSU Billings chancellor

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - Montana State University President Waded Cruzado announced Tuesday that the university will go forward with a nationwide search to fill the chancellor position at MSU Billings.

This announcement comes after Cruzado hosted two forums on the MSU Billings campus - one for the community, the other for faculty and staff – to hear their opinions on filing the position.

MSUB's interim chancellor, Dr. Ron Larsen, confirmed through a university spokeswoman Tuesday that he will apply for the permanent job.

At the community forum, the overwhelming response was to hire Larsen full-time. Larsen, who was appointed to the interim position in December, had also indicated prior to the forums that he was interested in the full-time job.

While the majority of those who spoke during the Oct. 2 meeting suggested Cruzado forgo a national search all together, some argued that while they hoped Larsen would be the final pick, a national search would only give him more legitimacy.

In an email sent to the MSU Billings community on Tuesday, Cruzado said in part:

“Based on the recommendations I have received, I have decided that the best course of action at this moment is to proceed with a national search for the next chancellor of MSU Billings.

There were clearly two sides to this issue. There were those who advocated for an immediate appointment to save time and money and to provide continuity to the campus. On the other hand, other individuals expressed that a national search would provide a new chancellor with an important mark of legitimacy and credibility.

I also believe that a search allows the community to participate in this important process, a process that is common practice for the selection of executives within the Montana University System.”

In the email, Cruzado said the MSU Deputy Commissioner of Higher Education John Cech will chair the search committee. The next step will be to formalize a search committee, which Cruzado said will consist of staff, university leadership, donors and members of the community.

Cruzado said the goal is to have a permanent chancellor in place no later than July 1, 2018.
