Helena man testifies in child abuse case

HELENA - Aaron Oliphant, accused of severely injuring his 4-month-old son in 2016, testified as the only defense witness in Lewis and Clark County Court on Wednesday.

Oliphant is accused of causing his son to have five skull fractures.

Oliphant's lawyer asked if Oliphant harmed his child and Oliphant replied no.

He then told the jury he did not learn the extent of his son's injuries until the trial.

He added the baby had not been well a few days before prosecutors said the baby was injured.

Under cross-examination, the prosecutor asked Oliphant if he knew of any accident that would cause five skull fractures. 

Oliphant replied that he did not have an answer for that.

The prosecutors also asked if Oliphant agreed that "his son was shaken with such force that blood vessels in his eyes were severed."

Oliphant indicated that he did not have an answer. When the prosecutor insisted he answer, Oliphant replied yes.

The prosecutor then asked if Oliphant agreed that his son had five skull fractures so severe it jeopardized his life. Oliphant answered yes.

The jury is expected to begin deliberations on Wednesday afternoon.
