CLINTON - A 32-year-old Lolo man died after backing a car off a cliff near Clinton.

The Montana Highway Patrol reports that just before 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday the man was driving on U.S. Forest Service Road 4241 off of Schwartz Creek Road when the accident happened. A 44-year-old male passenger was also in the car. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time,.

The patrol reports the driver was not wearing a seat belt when the vehicle was backed off of a cliff and tumbled down a steep mountain side. The passenger was taken to St. Patrick Hospital.

Road conditions were dry at the time, and both alcohol and drugs are suspected as factors in the wreck, the patrol said.

The crash remains under investigation.
