Q2 Weather: The last of the smoky hot ones for a while for Billings

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - This could be one of the last smoky, hot days for a while here in the Billings area.

The temperature at 2 p.m  has already made its way up to 88 degrees and is expected to get into the 90s.

In the upper levels, we see that upper-level Ridge that has been producing the warm temperatures for the last few days beginning to flatten out.

This is allowing some cooler air from Canada to eventually push over the border and make its way into Montana in another 24 hours.

At the surface, you can see the next cold front already making its way down from Saskatchewan, Canada.

At the same time, a new batch of moisture is slowly starting to make its way up from the Great Basin Area and into Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

By the time Thursday gets here, a lot of moisture will start moving into Montana from the Southwest and producing steady rainfall.

Rainfall amounts are still on track to get above an inch in many places around south-central Montana.

Up in the mountains, above 8,000 feet, we can expect multiple inches of snowfall, especially around Glacier National Park.

While this event may not be a drought ender, it could be a season ender.

This could mean that 80s and 90s will no longer be the norm, but the exception as we head into mid September and early October.

In fact, we could wind up with high temperatures only getting into the low 50s by Friday afternoon, and overnight lows struggling to get above 39 degrees.

Tonight: Partly cloudy and still mild. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Low 62 degrees.

Wednesday: Partly sunny with a 20 percent chance for afternoon thunderstorms. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph the morning becoming northerly by the afternoon. High 82 degrees.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a 70 percent chance for rain in the morning then likely again in the afternoon and cooler. High 63 degrees.
