Montana Made: Accu-Scribe drills for success

Posted: Updated:

BUTTE - Accu-Scribe, a company based in Butte, is revolutionizing the drilling world.

“I was out on the rigs, directional drilling for several years, and saw that it’s a multi-million dollar operation and in today's standards we hinge this on 20 cent ear plugs and biased information which is just hand-written notes,” said Montana Tech graduate and Butte businessman Brian Gollehon.

Gollehon is talking about today's reality in drilling. Five people standing around, taking measurements, all in hopes of hitting a target 3.5 miles below ground.

His solution? A little more high tech.

Gollehon and team have designed a camera rig that mounts to the well head. It shoots pictures down the pipe and sends those images and measurements to a computer.

What used to take the work of five people actually at the drill site now only takes one, and one at a computer terminal anywhere on earth.

“Being out in the industry, right, it's two o'clock in the morning, it’s 20 degrees below zero and you're waking up, you're putting your gear on and you rush up to the floor. Right now there's a way you have to hold a tape measure, there's a way you've got to look at the ear plug, you've got to verify with four people,” said Gollehon. “When there's 18,000 feet of drill pipe on a rig floor and four extra people out there it's a mess. So let's take those four people off the floor, let's give them an automated system and let's make this more accurate, safe, and more efficient in what they're doing in their daily operations”.

Gollehon credits his education at Montana Tech for helping him develop his product that is changing the drilling world.

“We've put Montana Tech, our education, our roots together and utilized companies around town, and premium tools and instruments, some marketing people here and we've really put together a package here in Butte that we support fully and we're proud of what we do and we're here to stay,” said Gollehon.

Gollehon said a new version of Accu-Scribe is ready to hit the market and will be taken to North Dakota the first part of September.
