Blacksmith shows skills at MontanaFair

Posted: Updated:

One of the attractions at MontanaFair is a blacksmith from Joliet who has found through his work that he can make a part to fix just about anything.

He put his skills on display at MontanaFair on Saturday.

Russell Evertz and his company The Crag Forge make products out of steel.

He's a craftsman and an artist and has even forged his own tools.

The steel is heated to 1,600 degrees for the blacksmiths to shape into parts, tools, and art.

Evertz is also part of the Northern Rockies Blacksmith Association. He teaches his children to be self reliant and if something is broken to find a way to fix it.

"It's something from nothing and there's no other way that somebody can make what I'm doing," Evertz said. "You can't make what I'm making with a machine. That's the goal of all the products that I make, is that they can only be done handmade. You can have something function the same but it's not going to look like it was handmade like all of mine. It's very satisfying because you get to do everything from start to finish and not everybody gets to have a finished article coming out of their shop."

Evertz will give blacksmith demonstrations on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
