7 apply for upcoming state judge vacancy in Billings

Longtime Billings City Attorney Brent Brooks is among seven people who have submitted applications to replace outgoing District Court Judge Russell Fagg.

Applications for the upcoming vacancy were due Thursday, and Friday marked the beginning of a 30-day public comment period on the applications, according to the Montana Judicial Nomination Commission

Brooks has been the top legal adviser for the city of Billings since 1998.

Other applicants for the judicial seat include:

- Jessica Fehr, an attorney and shareholder at Moulton Bellingham P.C. and former Assistant U.S. Attorney.

- Donald Harris, an attorney and partner at Harris, Gannet & Varela, P.L.L.C.  

- Jacquelyn Hughes, a judge pro tem in Billings Municipal Court and an attorney in private practice at Hughes Law, P.L.L.C.

- Yvette Lafrentz, the Standing Master in the 13th and 22nd Judicial Districts.

- Joseph Raffiani, an attorney in private practice at Raffiani Law Firm, P.C.

- William Speare, an attorney in private practice at Speare Law Firm, P.C.

Following the public comment period the commission will interview applicants and submit names to Gov. Steve Bullock for appointment to the position.
