Q2 Weather: Passing cold front increases fire concerns

Posted: Updated:

A passing cold front continues to fire up thunderstorms across southern Montana Sunday afternoon and evening.

Along with low relative humidity, lightning, small hail and very little rain, thunderstorms with gusty winds of up to 60 mph could trigger new – or exacerbate existing - wild fires.

Monday’s high temps will be much cooler than they have been for some time, mostly in the 80s. Another round of thunderstorms is expected Monday afternoon and evening before another gradual warmup takes effect beginning Tuesday.

The forecast for Billings

Tonight: Cooler with a 40 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms, creating gusty northerly winds, and a low of 61.

Monday: Sunny and cooler with a 20 percent chance of morning and afternoon thunderstorms and a high of 86.

Monday night: Partly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms and a low of 60.

Tuesday: Sunny and warmer with a high of 89.
