Multiple agencies are responding to a wildfire burning south east of Glendive.

As of Friday afternoon, the fire had burned around 300 acres, according to Mary Jo Gehnert, the Dawson County DES coordinator.

The fire is burning in very rough terrain near the backside of Makoshika State Park.

It was first noticed sometime between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday.

It is not currently known how the fire started, but no storms were observed in the area when the blaze began.

The DNRC is responding with 6 units along with Dawson Fire.

At least one helicopter is also aiding in the firefighting efforts and one County Road bulldozer.

The fire is currently being fanned by strong winds, but DES is hoping winds will die down in the evening.

There are no structures threatened at this time.

Gehnert said if the fire has not gone down by Saturday morning, crews will initiate a backburn to rob the fire of its fuel.
