Owner of pit bulls responsible for death of Bozeman woman facing criminal charges

The owner of the two pit bulls that caused the death of a Bozeman woman has been charged with four misdemeanor charges.

Wayne Bartlett, is charged with two counts of vicious/dangerous dog and two counts of failure to have current rabies vaccinations.

The charges are criminal violations of the Gallatin County Dog Ordinance.

Melissa Barnes, 65, was mauled by the dogs while doing yard work at the property she owned. She died on June 25.

The dogs were euthanized on June 26.

The dogs tested negative for rabies at Montana Department of Livestock’s Veterinary Diagnostic Lab

Those results allowed the victim to donate her organs.

Bartlett has until July 28 to make his appearance in court.
