State Rep. Jeff Essmann, R-Billings, chair of the Montana Republican Party and a small businessman announced last week that he will run for mayor.

Essmann, who is in Helena at the legislative session, sent paperwork to the Commissioner of Political Practices, but has not filed at the elections office.

Cole filed a little before 9 a.m. Thursday and made his official announcement near the airport to run for Mayor of Billings early Thursday afternoon.

Cole owns the Cole Law Firm and he is chairman of the Billings Chamber of Commerce board.

Cole said he's hearing that people want something other than partisan bickering.

"That is something that puts our community and our neighbors ahead of ourselves,” Cole said.

“And I would call that love. I would hope that as any person who gets this job could be an ambassador for all the different parts of Billings," he said.

Michael Larson, who was on the city council from 1996-2003, will run in Ward 3.

The Yellowstone County Elections Office has the official list of candidates.

The deadline for candidates to file is June 19.
