Petrino excited about Rocky quarterback battle

BILLINGS -

The old saying goes, "If you have to quarterbacks, you don't have any." But Rocky Mountain College first-year head coach Jason Petrino doesn't see it that way.

The Bears are two weeks away from their 2016 season opener in Havre against MSU-Northern, and Petrino isn't ready to name a starting QB between Chase White and Jacob Bakken.

White started all 11 games for the Bears in 2015, and the senior is the favorite to get the first shot under center, but Wibaux product Jacob Bakken has impressed the new staff.

Bakken, a redshirt sophomore, saw limited action last season, mostly in specialty formations, and Petrino is thrilled that in a season of change, he doesn't need to look outside the program for his signal-caller.

"It makes me a lot more comfortable, honestly," Petrino said. "You know, if we were coming in not only looking for a recruiting class but also for a quarterback, we'd all be sitting around saying, 'Oh, did we find the guy? Did we find the guy?' We're very, very happy with Jacob Bakken in the back-up role right now, but we expect those two guys to compete. Chase had a good year last year, but Jacob Bakken came in and did a lot of great things as well."
