HAMILTON -

Ravalli County commissioners have declared a "local emergency situation" as the Observation Point fire south of Hamilton has grown to over 600 acres.

The Observation Point fire near Lost Horse Road is threatening property and lives, with the Ravalli County Sheriff's Office warning of possible Stage 1 evacuations, meaning there's a high probability that folks will have to leave the area.

No evacuations had been ordered as of mid-morning on Wednesday.

Commissioners said in their resolution approved on Wednesday that the state of emergency was declared since the hot, dry and windy conditions are "not expected to substantially change in the immediate future."

The resolution also allows the Ravalli County Sheriff's Office "or any law enforcement operating under its authority" to "compel the evacuation of people when needed."
