Montana veterans find hope in horses

Posted: Updated:

From the battlefield to the barn, veterans in Montana are finding hope and healing in a hoof print.

"When I leave the city limits, I already have lower anxiety. I get to work with a horse that is receptive to me," said Miguel Gonzales, founder and president of Warrior Wishes MT. "It seems to understand me and I understand the horse and that just makes the whole experience different… and fun!"

From dusty roads to dusty clothes, these warriors are learning to reconnect with both two- and four-legged friends through both Horses Spirits Healing and Warrior Wishes.

"I love seeing the effect they can have on other people. Horses are so honest and caring and they bring out the best in you," said Horses Spirits Healing Program Director Anvia Hampton. "They bring out emotions you don’t even realize are going on, and so it really gives you a chance to understand yourself."

These veterans can share stories and these horses are always willing to trade an ear for a carrot.
