Posted: Updated:

MSUB senior Della Lyle concluded her collegiate career with All-America honors, placing ninth Friday in the 3,000 meter steeplechase finals at the 2016 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Lyle's time was 10:33.17 in a field of 12. She becomes MSUB's first female track and field All-American. She placed one spot off the podium with the top-8 finishers earning First Team All-American honors and the next four earning second team.

Emily Oren from Hillsdale successfully defended her national title, breaking open the race in the first lap by rocketing out ahead of the field, gradually increasing her lead through the entire 7 and ½ laps. Oren finished the race in 10:06.75 to win the championship. Her sister, Molly Oren, finished the runner-up in the event in 10:11.40. Nicole Borofski from Stonehill placed third in 10:15.27.

Dani Eggleston from Central Washington finished eighth, earning the final spot on the podium, just ahead of Lyle in 10:28.85. Eggleston also finished just ahead of Lyle in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships two weeks ago during the conference title race.

Lyle punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships with a runner-up finish at the GNAC Outdoor Championships in 10:29.98.

She qualified for Friday’s final with an 11th place finish in Thursday's prelims. The Buffalo, Wyo., native finished fifth in the first heat in 10:26.88. With the top-4 advancing from each of two heats, plus the next four fastest times, Lyle had to wait for the second heat to finish to see if she had earned a spot in Friday's finals.

Lyle stayed in 11th place through the five-minute mark, advancing to 9th with two laps left. Lyle fell to 10th in the final stretch, but was able to climb to ninth on the straightaway. Emily Oren won by nearly five seconds over sister Molly. Lyle finished 1:23.44 off the pace.
