The Billings Catholic Schools celebrated the construction of its new $18 million building with a groundbreaking on Thursday.
Rita Turley, campaign co-chair for the project, called it "a momentous day for the Billings Catholic community" with the first visible signs of the construction of the new school at 2202 Colton Blvd.
About 900 students from the Billings Catholic Schools System also attended the ceremony.
Mike Herringer, campaign co-chair, said the new St. Francis K-8 School shows a "faith commitment and generosity of so many people."
The campaign has raised $13 million and the hope is to have all the money raised by the time the school opens in the fall of 2017.
The first phase will be completed and includes the shell of the building, landscaping, paving and parking lots
The second phase will include the gym, the floor, locker room, athletic equipment, curtain, lockers and most of the furniture, fixtures and equipment.
