Griz Spring Game to feature new format Saturday

Posted: Updated:

The Montana Grizzlies play their final spring scrimmage Saturday, but under a new format, in the annual Griz Game at 2 p.m. inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

In past spring games the Griz have run through the playbook with the offense squaring off against the defense in a fairly basic setup designed to give the players much needed reps. In his second year at the helm of the Grizzlies, coach Bob Stitt has something different up his sleeve.

For the first time in recent memory, the Griz will split into two totally separate teams for the spring scrimmage, a white team and a maroon team, giving the event as close to a game-like feel as possible for players and fans alike.

“We decided to go this route for a couple of reasons,” said Stitt. “Number one, I wanted to blend the “O” and the “D” into teams where they’re working together and cheering for each other, and it’s not just an “O” versus “D” thing.

“The other thing is, you now make your backups starters, and put some pressure on them. The third string guys also become backups. It gives a lot of younger guys, and guys that are down on the depth chart a chance to show what they can do.”

The team will be roughly split into the No. 1 offense versus the No. 2 defense on the Maroon team, and the No. 2 offense versus the No. 1 defense with the quarterbacks mixed in on different teams at different times.

The scrimmage will be split into four quarters, with the first two lasting 12 minutes, and the third and fourth quarters lasting 10 minutes.

Tickets are $5 per person. A noon tailgate party hosted by the Grizzly Scholarship Association will take place in Memorial Grove just north of Washington-Grizzly Stadium.  The tailgate will include music, food, and drinks.

Proceeds from the game will benefit the Grizzly Scholarship Association.

Ticket outlets are at the Adams Center Box Office, GSA Office, Press Box, Red's Bar, and Stockman's Bar.  For more information call 406-243-6481.

There are several other events happening on the University of Montana campus around Washington-Grizzly Stadium Saturday. Fans are encouraged to park along campus drive and toward the south and east side of the stadium. The south and west gates of Washington-Grizzly Stadium will be open during the spring game.
