Sonny Holland Spring Game set for Friday night

Posted: Updated:

Jeff Choate reaches another milestone Friday, when Montana State’s first-year head coach presides over his first Sonny Holland Spring Game Sponsored by the Rocking R Bar as Montana State’s head football coach.

After 13 practices – the team puts a bow on spring drills with a brief session Monday afternoon – Choate’s goals for his team remain roughly what they’ve been from the beginning. “I want to see a lively, spirited exchange,” he said. “And I want to have a little bit of fun.”

Choate indicated before the beginning of spring drills five weeks ago that a renewed emphasis on fundamentals was a primary function of this spring’s practices. He said that will be an emphasis for his staff on Friday. “We want to see some of the things we’ve tried to implement over the course of spring practice – good pad level, better tackling, being assignment sound,” he said. “Those are the things we’re looking for.”

While Friday’s session begins at 7 pm with drill work, the fun begins quite a while earlier. At 5 pm, the R Bar sponsors a tailgate party in the Great Falls tailgate area just north of Bobcat Stadium. Throughout the night there will be interactive and entertaining activities interspersed in the scrimmage.

For Choate, though, the bottom line remains football. “I just want to see a competitive exchange. We’re obviously not going to open up the playbook, it will be basic on both sides of the ball, but I want to see the kids compete.”

The scrimmage should last until around 9 pm.
