Bobcats seek improvement in Great Falls

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

Jeff Choate will check off another event from his ‘first-time’ list when his MSU Bobcats visit Great Falls for the annual Triangle Classic. The banquet is Friday beginning at 6 p.m. at Four Seasons Arena, with the scrimmage opening at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

“I think it will be a really cool event,” says Choate, in his first season at MSU. “I haven’t been part of anything like this before. It will be a great opportunity to get to know some Bobcats from different parts of the state and experience the great support for this program.”

The 2016 Bobcats are two-thirds through Choate’s first season in charge of the program, and he likes the progress he’s seen. “It’s been incremental progress,” he said, “but that’s the best kind. I’m not seeing huge leaps then steps back, it’s been steps back. It’s been steadier.”

Choate said Bobcat fans in Great Falls Saturday will see the team in its natural habitat. “We’ll have (a live scrimmage segment), but we’ll also include some individual and group work so it will be a practice. Saturday, next Friday’s (Sonny Holland) scrimmage, and the other two practices will all be opportunities for us to get better as a team. We’ll take advantage of those opportunities.”

The weekend’s trip to Great Falls also offers Choate the opportunity for a dry-run road trip. “We’ll be able to treat this like a road game,” he said. “We’ll meet the night before, simulate our travel schedule the best we can, and use the chance to instill our expectations in the players for how we travel.”

Montana State’s football team and spirit squad will conduct youth clinics at or around Memorial Stadium beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. The day’s opportunity for autographs will be between the clinics and scrimmage. On-site clinic registration is available, and scrimmage tickets are available at the Stadium for $5.
