Adams named Mountain West Player of the Year

Posted: Updated:

Wyoming’s Josh Adams has been voted the Mountain West Player of the Year by members of the media who cover the conference. The senior guard earned seven of 11 votes for the award and tallied 160 points for All-MW first-team honors as well, while junior guard Jason McManamen claimed honorable mention. The all-conference awards as voted by the head coaches will be announced Tuesday.

Adams, a native of Parker, Colo., has compiled one of the most prolific seasons in Cowboy history during 2015-16. His 24.9 points per game lead the MW and rank third in the NCAA, as he has scored 30 or more in nine games and 20 or more in 21 contests. His 722 points this season broke Wyoming’s single-season record of 701 by Flynn Robinson in 1964-65. Adams has also made 94 threes this season to rank second in Cowboy single-season history, which includes a school-record nine in Wyoming’s win at Colorado State on Feb. 20. Other highlights for Adams include a career-high 38 points in Wyoming’s victory at New Mexico on Jan. 16, the program’s first win in The Pit since 2003.

Scoring wasn’t the only thing Adams has done well this season, as he also paces the Pokes in rebounds at 5.6 per game and assists at 4.2. He ranks second in the MW in assists per contest and fifth in steals at 1.5. Beyond the arc, Adams makes a MW-high 3.2 threes per game and ranks fifth in the league at 38 percent. Adams also paces the conference at 36.8 minutes per game, as he ranks in the top 10 of 11 MW statistical categories.

McManamen has had a breakout season in 2015-16 as well. His 14.1 points per game rank 10th in the MW, while his team-best 45 percent beyond is first in the conference and 10th in the NCAA and his 3.0 triples per game are second and 25th, respectively.

Eight-seeded Wyoming opens the 2016 MW Championships in Las Vegas against ninth-seeded Utah State on Wednesday at 12 p.m. MT in the Thomas & Mack Center.
