A science teacher from Billings Senior High School celebrated an honor at the Lincoln Center Board Room on Thursday.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau helped recognize Craig Beals.

She presented him with a $3,000 stipend from the state for earning a national board certification.

Beals teaches chemistry and biology.

He went through a two-year process and says the national board has helped him rethink how he teaches.

"I say I do all this for the kids, but really I get so much satisfaction out of it," Beals said. "I wonder if it's not more for me than it is for them. My personal life, my passions, my hobbies and work, I can't even draw the line between them any more."

"I've tried to put myself in the student's seat a whole lot more than I did in the past and look at myself and determine is that guy up there really doing what's best for me as a student."

Beals also won the Montana Teacher of the Year Award in 2014.
