Jackets sweep golf team titles, medalist honors to RMC

HUNTLEY – After finishing the first round in a deadlock with Rocky Mountain College, MSUB's golf men shot their second straight 292 to edge the Battlin' Bears and claim the team title at the 2015 St. Vincent Healthcare Yellowjacket Spring Invitational Tuesday at Pryor Creek Golf Club.

MSU Billings finished with a 584 (292-292) to beat Rocky by six strokes (590, 292-298).

“Our men played very well today and battled until the end,” commented MSUB head coach Shawn O'Brien. “Jake played extraordinarily well shooting two under on the day and five under for the tournament.”

Rocky's Taylor Noble shot 66-71 (137) for medalist honors. Noble matched Houston Bradbury for the tournament-high with 28 pars, and led the field with 10 birdies.

Jake Hedge finished in second place overall, with a 3-under par 139 (69-70) over the two rounds. Hedge finished with 22 pars, eight birdies and one eagle over the 36 total holes in the tournament.

Also in the top-5 for the ‘Jackets was Houston Bradbury, who finished tied for third place with a two-round total of 144 (73-71). The senior led the tournament field with 28 pars and he also had four birdies over his two rounds.

In eighth place for the Yellowjackets was Austin Westphal, shooting a 149 (77-72). The senior shaved five strokes off of his first-round total, finishing with 24 pars and four birdies.

Austin Berg tied for 13th place overall, with a two-round total of 152 (73-79). Berg, a freshman, made par 23 times and added four birdies.

Parker Bradbury completed the field for the Yellowjackets, finishing in 31st place with a score of 164 (77-87). Freshman Dalton Hagadone also participated in the tournament, scoring a 162 (82-80) as an individual.

Joining Noble, Hedge, and Bradbury on the all-tournament team was Walker Hoolehan of South Dakota Mines, who finished tied for third with a 144 (75-69), and Connor Hausauer of Carroll College who finished fifth with a 145 (76-69).

Bradbury earned the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day honors as he improved two strokes over his Round 1 total and ensure the team win for the ‘Jackets.

“Today's performance will give our team good momentum moving into Arizona next week,” O'Brien said.

NEXT UP: The ‘Jackets are set to compete in the Western New Mexico Invitational on April 6-7 at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. MSUB will then compete in the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational the following week before the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at the Coeur d'Alene Resort on April 20-21.

Meantime, with four of their five finishing in the top 10, MSUB's women fired a 622 (313-309) also cruising to a team win.

The Yellowjackets led by 30 strokes after a first-round total of 313, and played even better in the second round and tied their 2014-15 single-round season low with a 309 in Round 2.

“Our women played amazing today,” said MSUB head coach Shawn O'Brien. “Everyone hit the ball great.”

The single round of 309 carded by the Yellowjacket women on Tuesday was the fourth-lowest in the program's history.

Rocky's Kyla Clancy earned medalist honors with a 151 (76-75), edging Carroll's Jackie Mee (152, 75-77) by one stroke. The Battlin' Bears finished second with a team score of 667 (339-328), while Carroll was two strokes behind at 669 (333-336).

Sammy Walter led the way for the Yellowjackets in third place by shooting a 154 (78-76), improving by two strokes in her second round. The freshman finished the tournament with 18 pars and five birdies, and was named the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day on Tuesday.

“Sammy is playing fantastic right now and hitting the ball very well,” O'Brien said.

Just one stroke behind Walter was Haley Shackelford, who shot a 155 (78-77). Shackelford tied for the second-most pars in the tournament with 22 and had four birdies as well.

Finishing in sixth place was freshman Bailee Dexter, who fired a 156 (81-75) and used six fewer strokes her second time through the course. Dexter finished with 17 pars and a tournament second-best six birdies.

Mariah Cleveland landed a top-10 finish, shooting a 157 (76-81) over the two rounds. The senior captain tied for the second-most pars with 22 and also had three birdies in the tournament.

Also improving on the final day was MSUB's Carlan Campbell, who cut off 11 strokes and finished with a 179 (95-84).

Clancy, Mee, Walter, and Shackelford each earned all-tournament honors by finishing in the top-5, and Amanda Johnson of Black Hills State joined the group with that honor by tying Shackelford in fourth with a 155 (78-77).

“I am excited to get on the road and play in Arizona later this week,” O'Brien said.

The tournament will serve as the final tune-up before the team's return to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at the Coeur d'Alene Resort on April 20-21.
