Medicine Crow Middle School breaks ground

Posted: Updated:

School District 2 celebrated a groundbreaking for the Medicine Crow Middle School in the Heights on Wednesday afternoon.

The school's namesake was on hand to be part of the ceremony.

Dr. Joe Medicine Crow, 101, talked about education in Billings, telling the crowd that he's been coming to Billings for the past 100 years.

"Billings is my town," Medicine Crow said. "And I'm certainly proud and glad to see Billings growing bigger and better in the field of education."

Medicine Crow is a decorated war veteran, the last war chief of the Crow Tribe, and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The middle school named in his honor is under construction at the corner of Bench Boulevard and Barrett Road, just north of Bitterroot Elementary School.

"It's very exciting," said Superintendent Terry Bouck. "Of course the excitement will really ramp up when they start building it, which will happen almost instantly. This school will mean smaller class size, more opportunities, a strong safe environment."

"Billings is getting like me, getting older, but also like me, better," Medicine Crow said.

The school is scheduled to be open at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.
