Wyo. real estate agents say tax credit was a boon

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) Real estate agents in Wyoming say the first-time homeowner tax credit lifted sluggish sales last year, but it's still difficult to tell just how many sales were finalized because of the tax credit.

Steven Beazley, the 2010 president of the Wyoming Association of Realtors, says the tax credit lifted the industry through the typically slower winter months. Norm Morris, president of the Cheyenne Board of Realtors, says sales overall were comparable between 2008 and 2009.

The credit gave first-time homebuyers who bought between January and November of 2009 an $8,000 tax credit. The Internal Revenue Service says more than 1.4 million Americans took advantage of the offering. A similar credit is being offered this year.

Morris says the market for lower-priced "starter" homes remained stable throughout 2009.
