BOZEMAN - The West Lady Bears opened their State Volleyball title defense with a 3-0 sweep over Kalispell Flathead, fighting off a slow start that saw West battle back from game point in the opening set.

Flathead took a 24-23 lead in Game 1 before West's Cherina Walen evened the score with a big crosscourt kill. West then won the next two points to take the opener, 26-24.

The Lady Bears looked much more comfortable in Game 2. They won it 25-16. Flathead came out attacking in Game 3, taking an 18-10 lead. But West won 15 of the last 17 points in the game to take it, 25-20, and earn a three-game sweep.

West was led by Kylie Nielsen and Jenna Fiscus, with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Nielsen also led the team with 16 digs, while Janiel Olson chipped in with a game-high 8 blocks.

West moves on to tonight's quarterfinals, where they will play the winner of the Bozeman - Helena contest, at 6:00 pm.
