BILLINGS - The Billings Fire Department is at the scene of a house located at 395 Sahara Drive in the Billings Heights.
Assistant Fire Chief Frank Oderman says that no one was inside the house at the time of the fire, but two pet dogs and a pet bird remained in the home and are yet to be recovered.
An attached double car garage at that address was completely destroyed due to flames.
There was also extensive damage to the home, but Oderman says it was not completely destroyed.
Two vehicles parked outside of the garage were also destroyed, and one, a pickup truck, was leaking gasoline which was causing flares of fire.
The Billings Police Department was on scene at the fire and had blocked off through traffic to Sahara Drive, but it is expected to re-open when crews leave the home.
Oderman says the cause of the fire remains unknown, but a fire marshal would be evaluating the site as soon as possible.
Oderman says upon crews arriving on scene the fire was so intense and large, some witnesses claiming to see flames as high as 50 feet in the air, that crews decided to take a defensive approach to the fire.
However, crews quickly changed their strategy after deciding it was safe to actively fight the fire, and were able to subdue the flames.
Oderman says a crew will remain on scene to mop up the fire until the leaking truck is deemed safe.
