BILLINGS - By this October, Billings may have a trail system that connects the rims to the river.
With representatives from the City of Billings, BikeNet, and Billings Chamber of Commerce/CVB, the second phase of the Swords Park Trail broke ground Monday afternoon near Yellowstone Kelly's grave site.
The trail will connect to the existing pedestrian tunnel under Airport Road and to the existing trail section south of the Aronson/Airport Road interchange.
In addition to enhancing the quality of life for current residents, the Billings Chamber/CVB also says the trail system also creates economic development in Billings.
"It's helping groups that are looking at a community to relocate their business, or for residents to move to a community, for physician recruitment. For people that want to make a decision to live in a community, they've got to be happy with what there is available," explains Billings Chamber/CVB President John Brewer. "People are commenting on their reasons to move here have to do with those cultural amenities as well as those outdoor recreation possibilities."
A new community fundraising initiative to improve Swords Park by developing signage and amenities along the trail was also launched at the event.
