LAS VEGAS - Riding Tremors (Boyd/Floyd/C&G Rodeo/TenEyck) for 90 points in Round 3 on Saturday, Luke Snyder remained in first place in the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough World Finals at the Thomas & Mack Center.
For the second night in a row, two-time World Champion Chris Shivers brought the enthusiastic crowd of 12,792 to their feet when he rode Shepherd Hills Sod Buster (D&H Cattle/Luthy/Shepherd Hills Cutlery) for 90.75 points to win Round 3. It was the second night in a row that Shivers, who will make his final ride on Sunday, won the round. Shivers, who has earned $50,000 in the last 48 hours, announced that he planned to choose 2007 World Champion Bull Chicken on a Chain for Round 4 on Saturday. It will be the first meeting between the two World Champions.
Round 4 will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Round 5 and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round are at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available at the Thomas & Mack Center box office, www.UNLVTickets.com, and by telephone at (866) PBR-SHOW.
Snyder has 267 points, and a 2.25-point lead over Robson Palermo in the average. Shivers is in third place with 180.50 points, followed by Austin Meier with 175 points, and Emilio Resende with 174.50 points. Snyder won the World Finals Event title and was Rookie of the Year in 2001, while Palermo won the Finals title in 2008 and 2011. The Event Finals winner receives $250,000.
The World Finals has a total purse of $2.2 million, including a $1 million bonus to the World Champion, who also receives the coveted championship buckle.
Valdiron de Oliveira rode Josey Wales (New Frontier Rodeo) for 86.50 points to finish ninth, while defending World Champion Silvano Alves finished tied for 10th after riding Hee Bee Gee Bee (Boyd/Floyd Bull Company) for 86 points. Oliveira gained 18 points in the Built Ford Tough Series standings, and trails Alves by 203.25 points.
The World Finals consist of six rounds of competition featuring the Top 35 bull riders in the world, and the world's rankest bulls. The first five rounds feature all of the riders against the toughest bulls. The scores from the five rides will be combined, and the Top 15 riders will advance for an additional round of competition, following the completion of Round 5. The rider with the highest total score for the six rounds will earn the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals Event title and $250,000.
The World Champion will be the rider with the most Built Ford Tough Series points accumulated during the regular season and the World Finals.
It is the 19th year in a row that the world's top bull riders and the fiercest bucking bulls have competed in Las Vegas.
The World Finals field includes six former PBR World Champions, with Alves, Guilherme Marchi (2008), Nunes (2010), Kody Lostroh (2009), Mike Lee (2004), and Chris Shivers (2000 and 2003). It is the last chance for fans to watch Shivers, who announced that he will retire following the World Finals.
The PBR Fan Zone & Marketplace has something for everyone, including sponsor displays, Flint Rasmussen's "Outside the Barrel" show, Wool Warriors, Chris Shivers' Mini Bull Riding, live music on the Cooper Tires Stage, and more. Located in the south parking lot at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, the PBR Fan Zone & Marketplace is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, Wednesday, Oct. 24, Thursday, Oct. 25, and Friday, Oct, 26, and from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.
Purina Mills will present the NHRA Ride a Reiner program from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the PBR University Arena at the Mandalay Bay Fan Zone and Marketplace. Purina Mills and NHRA will offer test rides to PBR spectators. For those who have some riding experience, "Ride a Reiner" will give them the opportunity to enjoy a dizzying spin or even a sliding stop on a well-trained reining horse.
Award-winning singer/songwriter Easton Corbin will open Championship Sunday on Oct. 28, taking the stage at 11a.m., immediately followed by Round 5 and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round at 11:30 a.m.
NBC Sports Network will broadcast Round 4 at 9 p.m. ET on Oct. 27. NBC will broadcast Round 5 and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round at 4 p.m. ET on Oct. 28.
