BILLINGS - School District two is moving forward one day after the school board bought out its former superintendent. Now many are wondering who will lead the state's largest school district?
Assistant Superintendent and CFO Dr. Josh Middleton and Gail Surwill, Assistant Superintendent, have been serving as the district's top leaders for the past year. Dr. Middleton served as Laurel's superintendent before transitional to School District 2 last year and Gail Surwill has worked for 32 years in the district. Q2 asked both if they would be interested in serving as the district's top leader.
"If asked, I would certainly serve in that role. I had applied a couple years ago so I'd be comfortable in that," said Dr. Josh Middleton about being asked to serve as an interim superintendent.
"Being an assistant superintendent of teaching and learning is exactly where my strengths can be used. When we look at appointing or whatever they are going to do for the interim, I think it's pretty logical that Josh would be that person," said Gail Surwill, about the superintendent position.
Right now, both Surwill and Middleton will fill the role of superintendent. Both acknowledge the rocky past, but say the students need to remain the focus of the school district.
