BILLINGS - Construction on the second largest sporting goods store west of the Mississippi will soon begin right here in Billings.
And Saturday, Scheels All Sports celebrated with a groundbreaking.
Scheels employees helped with the ceremonial first dig, at Shiloh Crossing at Shiloh and King.
The new store will be 220,000 square feet, six times bigger than the current Scheels location at Rimrock Mall, and smaller than the 295,000 square foot Scheels in Reno, Nevada.
Scheels says the new location will not just be about shopping., as it hopes to be a destination, which will include sports simulators, a walk of presidents, a deli and other entertainment.
"If you've never seen a larger Scheels store, it's really hard to wrap you head around it," said Dewey Algaard, store leader for the Billings Rimrock Scheels. "I think you can tell them there's going to be 65-foot ferris wheel and a 16,000 gallon aquarium with salt water fish in it. But until you see that, it's really tough to soak that in."
Construction starts in November and the new Scheels store is scheduled to open September 6, 2014.
