Ryan Leaf was arrested on Friday afternoon in Great Falls for criminal possession of dangerous drugs, felony burglary, and misdemeanor theft.
Leaf, a Great Falls native, was the second overall pick in the National Football League's 1998 draft; he played for the San Diego Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys during his NFL career.
Leaf posted bond of $76,000.
We will update you as we learn more.
Leaf recently released a book titled "596 Switch" which chronicles his years as a college athlete at Washington State University; last week he held a book signing event in Missoula and appeared on KPAX-TV to promote the book and discuss the Focused Intensity Foundation, aimed at providing prevention and treatment of addiction.
Leaf's website bio states:
In 1998 the San Diego Chargers selected Leaf as the second overall pick in the NFL draft behind Peyton Manning. With high expectations, Leaf's NFL career did not go as planned. Injuries on the field resulted in eight surgeries in 15 years, leading to an addiction to prescription painkillers.
Leaf retired, admitted himself into recovery, and has since focused his efforts on speaking with college athletes about lessons learned. He has also enjoyed numerous recent opportunities to be a sports commentator.
