LINCOLN- The U.S. Forest Service has determined a suitable repository site for mine waste from the Mike Horse Dam east of Lincoln after reviewing public comments and technical analysis..
The area is known as section 35 and lies north of Highway 279 and east of the Blackfoot River.
Helena National Forest Supervisor Kevin Riordan says the next step will be to work on data collection and developing a proper design for the repository.
The Mike Horse Dam is part of the inactive Upper Blackfoot Mining Complex and in 1975, the dam, holding a large amount of mine waste, breached and released contaminants into the Blackfoot River causing fish kills and environmental damage for miles downstream.
