HUNTLEY, MT - Flooding has damaged an irrigation canal crucial to Huntley Project farmers...who showed the damage to Congressman Denny Rehberg.
The farmers says sugar beet...corn and alfalfa crops came through the flooding fine...but they expect to need the irrigation canal fixed by July.
A temporary fix will cost between 150-thousand to 250-thousand dollars.
Representative Rehberg and Yellowstone County Commissioner John Ostlund along with the Huntley Project Irrigation District Board...looked at the damage from Pryor Creek.
Normally Pryor Creek flows through the area to the front of this picture...but the creek has taken out land and formed a new path.
The Congressman also visited Big Horn County and the Crow Indian Reservation...and says through all this...he has seen people helping each other.
"you don't look to the federal government first," Rehberg said. "It's neighbor helps neighbor, and then the city steps in, and then the county steps in, and then the state, and the feds help last. If we look to somebody 2,000 miles away, that's not the first responder. Your first responder is your next door neighbor. And we've seen that.. We've had a lot of volunteerism. People coming together. It makes montana a community again."
The commissioners have scheduled a meeting with the Huntley Project Board for Tuesday at 1:30 at the Yellowstone County Courthouse.
