BILLINGS - The Montana State University Billings' men's golf team shot a school-record low round score of 271 to finish the first day of the MSUB Triangular in first place.
The Yellowjackets were led Gage Huft's 64, nine-under-par, first round total. The sophomore shot 31 through the first nine holes, and 33 on the back-nine. MSU Billings went 1-2-3 in the first round. Behind Huft were Marcus Drange and Brad Harrelson. Drange recorded a 66, while Harrelson sits in third with a 69. Drange and Huft both shot an eagle on the first day, and Huft also added seven birdies.
"Gage and Marcus played exceptional today," MSUB men's golf head coach Shawn O'Brien said. "It is nice to see leadership taking place right now."
As a team, Montana State Billings hit three birdies, 22 birdies, and 48 pars. The Yellowjackets were 13-under-par on par-five holes. Eric Gravbrot sits tied in seventh place after shooting a 72 Monday. Houston Bradbury is in 13th, three-over-par. MSUB's Wyatt Nielson, playing as an individual, is also tied in seventh.
"I am very proud of all of our golfers today," O'Brien said. "Our entire team played well and hit some great golf shots. It is also exciting that we broke our team individual round record shooting 13-under. It seems like every time we play this fall we get better and break some record we broke the week prior."
Rocky Mountain's Taylor Noble was the only other golfer to shoot under-par in the first round. He finished the first 18 holes with a 70. RMC's Cody Scheierman and South Dakota Mines' Bryan Schulte both are in fifth place at even par.
Earlier this season, the MSU Billings' men recorded the then-single-round record at the Colorado School of Mines' Invitational shooting a 280. Just a week earlier, the Yellowjackets recorded a 281 at the Yellowjacket Invitational, a school record at the time.
The second day of play begins at 9 a.m., at the Peter Yegen Golf Club. Results will be posted on MSUBSports.com soon after the final round ends.
