YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK - Rain squelched a wildfire burning in Yellowstone National Park Sunday and Monday, reducing fire behavior to a minimum.
The 218-acre Arthur 2 Fire is burning 52 miles west of Cody, Wyoming in timber. Lightning sparked the fire on Wednesday, Aug. 18.
About a third of an inch of rain fell on the blaze between Sunday night and Monday morning.
"Firefighters saw a tree torch at 6:15 this morning, however the fire won't likely grow until the weather is warmer and drier. Fire season does not wind down in Yellowstone until late-September, so the Arthur 2 Fire may still become active," Yellowstone staff said in a news release Monday.
Crews plan to release many of the resources assigned to the fire on Monday. Fifty-seven people were assigned to the fire on Monday.
"As a lightning-ignited fire, the Arthur 2 Fire is in line with the park's resource management plan that allows natural processes to occur when possible in Yellowstone Park. Representatives from the neighboring Shoshone National Forest and Park County, Wyoming, have been involved in the decision to manage the fire," the release states.
