HAMILTON - Fire fighters are gaining a footing with progress on the Sawtooth Fire, reaching 20 percent containment as of Wednesday evening.

The Sawtooth blaze, which is about four miles west of downtown Hamilton, stands at about 4,500 acres, according to an evening update from fire officials.

Some evacuated residents were allowed to return home Wednesday under restrictions. Fire officials warn that the fire is still very active, smoky and dangerous.

"We have been receiving comments that this fire has "done its thing". The fire and the history of fire in the Bitterroots do not support that as a fact," reads incident commander Tom Heintz's press release.
