BILLINGS - For more than two decades, a Montana group has offered a unique opportunity to experience the world of music and arts. This week, that tradition continues at Will James Middle School for the 26th annual Montana Music Institute.
As you walk the halls, you can hear the unique sounds of beginning musicians. Although, it may not exactly be music to your ears, these young kids are learning the fundamentals of music.
"This immersion in a week-long music and arts program is, I think it's key for some cognitive development, some character development, some life skills about commitment and follow through and dedication," said Gail Grossman, Montana Music Institute Board Secretary.
Around 100 people from across Montana and Wyoming are in Billings for the annual Montana Music Institute. People from four to 104 can immerse themselves in everything from violin to harp, and even a new language. In one classroom, a group of young children sing a song in Spanish. The camp isn't just about playing instruments, it's learning to expand a person's experience with the arts.
Eight-year-old Maddie Fink says the program is a way for her to learn more about music and hang out with new friends,"I think it's awesome."
And best of all, she can play any instrument she wants.
"I think it's cool because you get to learn things and if something's too easy for you can always ask the person who's teaching the class things that are harder," said Fink.
MMI members are happy this program helps nurture people of all skill levels.
"A lot of our kids here start with music here and then just go on and have some pretty phenomenal music careers," said Grossman.
Through music and the arts, these kids are finding their unique talents.
