Polar Plunge: Jumping into Flathead Lake's frigid waters

WOODS BAY - Every January, while some people make New Year's resolutions like cleaning or working out, some decided to take a plunge: the Polar Plunge.

On January 1 more than 100 people jumped into the frigid waters of Flathead Lake.

Polar Plunger James Jones said it's a big natural high. "You know, you go in there and adrenaline is the best drug in the world."

Dartagnan Kelly said, "My cousin over there, he's being kind of a wimp, cause he doesn't want to be on the news, he's kinda afraid. He's doing it because my aunt, she wanted to do it. Then everybody wanted to do it, but now nobody's wanting to do it except me and him."

By the time of the plunge, 2 p.m., the temperature was 28 degrees, but Flathead Lake was actually 34 degrees.

Fear didn't stop mother and daughter Suzie Elliot and Jill Zadney. Elliot had just celebrated another birthday as a 50-something, and now seemed like the time.

"You can say, I took the plunge, so yeah..." she said. At the Polar Plunge, the talk only lasts so long. Eventually, you have to get wet and cold.

This was the 20th Annual Flathead Lake Polar Plunge.
