Laramie, Wyo. - University of Wyoming sophomore quarterback Brett Smith on Wednesday was named the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Mountain West Player of the Week. Each week fans are given the opportunity to vote through Facebook for the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Mountain West and Pacific-12 Players of the Week.
This past week, Smith accounted for a career best 401 yards of total offense, while completing 20 of 28 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-34 loss to Toledo. He also ran for 62 yards. Smith threw touchdown passes of 38 yards to Dominic Rufran and 19 yards to Jalen Claiborne. He completed a career best 71.4 percent of his passes on the day. He was knocked out of the game with an injury with under seven minutes to go in the game.
Smith ranks in the Top 20 nationally among four categories this season. He's No. 9 in total passing yards (615), 13th in the NCAA in total offense (347.5 yards per game), 14th in averaging passing yards (307.5 yards per game) and 19th in passing efficiency (165.8 rating). Smith leads the Mountain West in total passing yards, passing yards per game and passing efficiency and ranks No. 2 in total offense this season.
Wyoming junior wide receiver Robert Herron won the opening week MAACO award after catching five passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns against 15th-ranked Texas.
This week's MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Pacific-12 Player of the Week was Arizona sophomore running back Ka'Deem Carey, who rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns in a 59-38 upset win of No. 18 ranked Oklahoma State.
