BILLINGS - Bicycles that some may have considered junk, now will help change lives in Namibia, Africa.
Bicycles for Humanity has collected about 500 old bikes in the last three weeks.
Volunteers will make repairs and then pack the bikes in a container that will be transformed into a bike shop when it arrives in Namibia.
The shop will provide jobs for 90 people...and the bikes will serve as transportation for many including home health care workers.
"They walk house to house," said Dan Austin, director of Bicycles for Humanity Montana. "They might be able to visit four or five houses a day. Whereas with a bike they can visit four times as many houses, or five times as many houses and stay longer and have a more quality visit."
"We're able to extend something that's collecting dust in our garage," said Mark Soueidi, owner of soon to be opened Montana Cycling. "Or something we're thinking of throwing away and it will completely turn someone's life around over there."
The Montana chapter just started...but Bicycles for Humanity has been around for five years and has sent 12-thousand bikes to Africa.
