SWEETGRASS COUNTY - A few dozen people were evacuated from their homes last night due to a natural gas leak in Sweetgrass County.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, a car slid off of Highway 10 east of Greycliff and collided into a gas main.

When Highway Patrol responded, the driver had fled from the crash in their vehicle.

Highway Patrol estimates around 600 gallons of natural gas were released in to the air near a subdivision before crews from Northwestern Energy shut off gas flow.

Residents were allowed to return home this morning. However, due to damages, the gas flow to the subdivision remains shut off.

We'll provide more updates as they become available.
