HELENA - The Board of Regents say they did as much as they could to shield students from college budget cuts.
The university system cut its budget 4.5 percent Thursday in a move requested by Gov. Brian Schweitzer. The governor had previously cut budgets a similar amount across the rest of state government.
The Board of Regents, which holds constitutional autonomy over the college budget, approved cuts that total nearly $7 million.
Research agencies are among the hardest hit with the cuts proposed by the Montana university system, although student help with tuition and campus budgets are hit as well.
Regents say students could notice larger class sizes or fewer offerings as a result.
