BILLINGS - MSU-Billings graduates went through the 85th annual commencement today at MetraPark's Rimrock Auto Arena.
Three years ago, the two winners of the outstanding senior award came 1,100 from California to Billings to attend college.
Kyle Goings and Tyler Rutledge grew up in Chico, California, about 90 miles north of state capitol, Sacramento.
And they're both happy they decided to go to school in Billings.
"I really never could've imagined it would have turned out this way, Goings said. "I guess better than I could've hoped for."
"It's much more than what I dreamed," Rutledge said.
Rutledge and Goings attended grade school together in the Chico area.
They went to different high schools, started at different colleges and then made a change.
"Just looking for something different," said Goings. " And really wasn't enjoying my college experience and decided try something different."
"Opportunity came up an we said, we've got to make it happen," Rutledtge said.
The chance to play sports, baseball for Rutledge and tennis for Goings, drew them to MSU-B.
Each played one semester and stayed for the rest of their college years.
"I'm really glad it's worked out," Goings said. "Definitely wouldn't want to have my college experience with anybody else."
And the two outstanding seniors say they've gained a lot from the experience.
"I really think it's opened up a lot of doors because I'm not afraid to be out of state," Rutledge said.
"I encourage people if there's something you want to go then go do it and don't look back," Goings said.
"Kyle and I, we consider ourselves Montanans now," Rutledge said. "Just been such a huge part of our lives for the last three years so.
Both Kyle Goings and Tyler Rutledge received their degrees in Special Education and Elementary Education.
They plan to student teach in California, and say after that, they may be back in Billings.
