Two women from Western Montana drowned Wednesday near Anchorage, Alaska after their canoe overturned.

The Anchorage Daily News reports Fern Johnson, 60, of Plains, and her sister, Carol Heater, 48, of Kalispell, were paddling in a canoe with Johnson's husband when they came to a large log jam, and a fast current overturned the canoe. The two women were caught under the debris and drowned, but Robert Johnson was able to get on the log jam and survived.

Authorities said the group was visiting Alaska and had just arrived in the state Wednesday.

All were wearing personal flotation devices at the time of the incident.
