HAMILTON - A Hamilton man who is accused of killing his common-law wife after a night of drinking and fighting pleaded not guilty in Ravalli County District Court on Thursday morning.
Douglas Charles Reynolds is facing a deliberate homicide charge for the November 11th incident at Deffy's Motel in Hamilton.
Prosecutors say Reynolds kept changing his story about what happened that night, but at one point he told investigators he "snapped" when his wife, Jessica Hawkins, became volatile.
Prosecutors say he held her down and hit her in the left temple with his elbow.
Reynolds reportedly told police he went to bed later that night and when he woke up he "freaked out" when he found his wife laying on the floor dead.
He asked the motel to call 911, but when medical personnel arrived Hawkins was still breathing. She was taken to the hospital where she died from brain damage a few days later.
Reynolds remains in jail on a $250,000 bail.
