HELENA - Mike Van Diest is and will remain the head coach of the Carroll College Saints football team.
That's the word from Carroll College athletic director Bruce Parker, who issued a statement on Monday evening stating that Van Diest will remain as head coach.
Parker said that Van Diest talked to his team on Monday evening to reassure them of his commitment to the program.
Carroll College president Tom Evans said, "The Carroll community is very happy that Mike will continue his leadership of our football program. We look forward to an exciting season."
(Monday, 3:16 pm) Carroll College football coach Mike Van Diest has not resigned, contrary to reports and rumors.
The 6-time NAIA National Championship-winning coach is currently away from the team while he decides on his future.
Carroll athletic director Bruce Parker has been in contact with Van Diest and is continuing to do so as the Fighting Saints prepare for their first game on August 24th.
Parker says he hopes to have "an idea of where things are going in a day or two."
A press release on Monday afternoon states:
Coach Mike Van Diest met with his upperclassmen on Sunday. He indicated to them that he was thinking about stepping away from the head coaching position of the Fighting Saints. Mike met with Athletic Director Bruce Parker Monday morning to discuss his comments and their conversations continue. At this point, no decisions have been made by Coach Van Diest. Parker confirms that Mike Van Diest remains the head football coach at Carroll College.
