Mayor Race: Hanel wins

Billings realtor, Tom Hanel, runs away with the city's race for mayor, while incumbents enjoy a big night in the city council races. In Tuesday's mail-in ballot city election more than 43% of eligible voters cast ballots shaping the face of city government for the next four years.

Topping the ticket, is Billings real estate broker, Tom Hanel, who swept to victory in the mayor's race-beating city councilman Dick Clark by more than a two to one margin. Unofficial returns show Hanel polling 15,777 votes to Clarks 7,371.

In the city council races, it was a big night for incumbents. Three won handily in their respective races. In Ward 1, incumbent Jim Ronquillo defeated challenger Amy Cowley by 704 votes.

In Ward 2, in the Billings Heights, Angela Cimmino will finally get a chance to sit on the city council. In the closest race, she defeated newcomer James Knox by just 196 votes.

Ward 3 saw Richard MacFadden running unopposed, and he polled nearly 98% of the votes cast.

In Ward 4, incumbent Ed Ulledalen was an easy winner over challenger James Dershian, garnering 72% of the votes cast.

And in Ward 5, incumbent Mark Astle defeated challenger Dennis Ulvestad, 61% to 38%.

Voter turnout this year more than doubled that from the contentious mayor's race in 2005 between Ron Tussing and Al Garver.

Elections officials report that 43% of voters in Billings mailed in ballots for Tuesday's election between Hanel and Clark. Of the 57,730 registered voters, 24,832 returned their ballots.

Four years ago, more than 11,000 voters cast their ballots out of some 50,000 registered voters.

The average turnout for a municipal election in Billings in years past has ranged between 20% and 25%.
