LAUREL - Fireworks will not be allowed in Laurel, after the city council passed an emergency ordinance, at a special meeting on Friday.

A Laurel city ordinance prohibits fireworks except for select days of the year. The emergency ordinance temporarily bans fireworks discharging on July 2, 3 and 4.

The ban does not include the annual 4th of July fireworks show put on by the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department. That show will go on as usual.

The city council voted 7-0 in favor of the emergency ordinance, which also puts a fine of up to $500 for a violation.

The ordinance cites weather and fires around the state as reasons for the ban.

An emergency ordinance requires a 2/3 majority of the council.

The emergency ordinance expires in 90 days.
