HELENA - The Helena Independent Record has laid off a handful of employees, and other Lee Enterprise employees across the state, including at the Billings Gazette, have been offered buyouts.
Staff members at the Independent have confirmed some positions have been entirely eliminated while other employees are being offered relocation packages. Publisher Randy Rickman declined to comment at this time.
Sources tell Montana's News Station that the positions at the Independent vary from the newsroom to the sales office.
This news comes several months after Lee Enterprises, the parent company of the Independent and the Billings Gazette, filed for bankruptcy, and also began limiting page views on its website after implementing a "pay wall."
The St. Louis Business Journal is reporting the Lee Enterprises Board just approved a $500,000 discretionary bonus for CEO Mary Junck. The Journal reports the bonus was due to the company's successful refinancing.
Today Lee stock was trading at 1 dollar 25 cents per share.
