Ledoux makes his move at Cheyenne

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Gabe Ledoux began playing catch-up in June.
His job's not complete, but he took a giant step on July 29 toward making a third trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
The 32-year-old steer wrestler qualified for the finals at Frontier Days in eighth place, 2.7 seconds behind the leader. But Ledoux threw his steer in 7.4 seconds, giving him a three-head total of 26.0 seconds and a championship buckle at the Daddy of 'em All, a Gold Tour stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, presented by Justin Boots.
"I didn't rodeo much after the winter rodeos and started up about a week before (the Reno, Nev., Rodeo)," Ledoux said. "This is one of the rodeos everybody wants to win and I was fortunate enough to get it done."
At Cheyenne, the steers get a much larger head start than they do at most rodeos, a 30-foot advantage that leads to slower times than is usual.
Ledoux took third place in the first round, wrestling his steer in 6.4 seconds, and then added a 12.2-second run to make the short round.
His short-round run topped the field by nearly a full second and he won the average by four tenths.
For the week, Ledoux earned $16,778, quite the haul for a cowboy who was sitting 23rd in the latest PRCA World Standings with about $26,500 earned on the year.
"It's a fun rodeo and a fun atmosphere, and it pays a lot," Ledoux said. "It's one of the best rodeos we have throughout the year.
"I had a slow winter, but it's been good since I started back. I had a decent Fourth (of July)."
Ledoux, who qualified for the NFR in 2006 and 2008, said he had already planned on staying out on the road, but the windfall certainly boosted his confidence.
The other winners at the $821,631 rodeo in Cheyenne were bareback rider Will Lowe (258 points on three head), team ropers Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith (28.6 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss (255 points on three head), tie-down roper Beau Marshall (38.8 seconds on three head), steer roper Jay Pixley (73.3 seconds on three head), bull rider Cody Whitney (263 points on three head) and barrel racer Mary Walker (34.56 seconds on two runs).
